Małgorzata Kowalczyk has mainly produced small tapestry works, thematically related to landscape and nature. Her output conveys simplicity and economy of form along with a range of warm colours.
Małgorzata Kowalczyk was born in Zakopane. She is a graduate of the Professional School of Weaving in Zakopane, where her teacher Maria Bujakowa helped to guide her artistic development. Between 1968 and 1970 she painted and drew in Professor Zdzisław Przebindowski's studio in Kraków. In 1975, after a few years working for Handicraft Ateliers in Zakopane, she commenced her own creative path in the field of tapestry. Since 1998, she has been a member of the Zakopane branch of the National Society of Artists. Her works can be found in the Tatra Museum's collections as well as in various Polish and foreign private collections.
The artist says about her work:
"Nature is a source of inspiration and a topic that constitutes an area of infinite research for artistic expression. The artist's way of thinking is conditioned by principles and requirements of the method and the material of which their work is made. A small form of tapestry compels the artist to think and act in accordance with simplicity and economy of form. While working on a project, on the idea of a composition, the artist strives to eliminate less important details so that the project in its final state contains a mystery which merits unravelling by a viewer.
My works are made of delicate wool, matte cotton, glossy silk and raw linen, which contrast with each other. The palette of colours and the range of shades are warm and pleasant to the eye; this builds up the atmosphere of a tapestry, deepens its expression and adds space, whilst strictly keeping to the requirements of the method.
