TO THE MOUNTAINS! CERAMIC ART 1930-1950

THE ITALIAN SEASON IN ZAKOPANE

May 15 – October 31, 2010

The Art Gallery in Koziniec
ul. Koziniec 8, Zakopane

This collection of artistic ceramics with mountains as the subject is part of Italy's National Mountain Museum's collection. There are rare items in it, now difficult to obtain, but they are part of the history of our homes, or rather of our grandmothers' and mothers' drawing rooms. They did not serve any practical function but were rather unusual forms of decoration.

They were designed by a number of artists, some of them well-known, and were produced in workshops and exported across the world. They became the height of fashion and were considered a highly desirable luxury. Even the top manufacturers produced them, such as Lenci in Turin. One of the frequent decorative motifs was To the Mountains! from 1936, from which the title of the exhibition has been taken.

Motifs appearing in the ceramics are rich in subject matter, from obviously futuristic to folk subjects, among which the motif of Small Skiers enjoyed huge popularity. Of the 47 items on display, 31 feature winter scenes, 28 of them present skiers, among which half show children on skis.

Most of the ceramics from the years 1929 - 1960 were made by Italian artists, such as Alpinist from 1929 and Dangerous Turn from 1941 signed by Tarcisio Tosin; in a completely different style Black and Navy Blue Skier by Rometti from 1935, which clearly features futuristic motifs, reflects the epoch and even the political system of the time, and finally Woman Skier by Tiziano Galli and Skier by Zaccagnini. The latter works are only thirty years old, but they were made at a time that was rich in events and historical changes in Italy.

All ceramic items presented in this exhibition have been prepared by Aldo Audisio and reproduced in the catalogue from the series Cahier Museomontagna with texts by Enrico Sturani, a specialist of iconography and traditions, and Luciano Proverbio, an artist and expert of Lenci's ceramic output.
