WITKACY. PSYCHOHOLISM.

June 15 – August 28, 2011

The Art. Gallery in Kozinec
Zakopane, Koziniec 8

At the Tatra Museum, the Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz  „season” continues. Apart from the exhibition „Zakopane – the Hub of the Universe. Art at the Foot of Giewont in the Years 1880-1939” at Oksza villa, where his pastels, drawings and photographs are on display, we present at the Art Gallery in Koziniec the exhibition WITKACY. PSYCHOHOLISM which has been prepared by the Bunkier Sztuki Contemporary Art Gallery in Kraków. Its curators are Maria Anna Potocka and  Stefan Okołowicz.

On display are more than 100 photographs by Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, aka  ‘Witkacy’, taken between 1910 and 1938, and three films – montages of Witkacy’s photographs, prepared by Stefan Okołowicz.

Witkiewcz, a „psychological portraitist”, strived to present the inner self of the featured person in his photographs. Witkacy regarded the camera simply as an instrument to assist his artistic creation. The point was not to document an event or the looks of a person but to carry out anthropological experiments and to reflect on human relations.

Witkacy, his acquaintances, family and friends all look at us from the photographs. The juxtaposition of self-portraits with portraits give an interesting contrast. On the one hand, the viewer is confronted with demonism and psychological exhibitionism, on the other with the mystery hidden in everyone’s interior.

You are invited to visit the exhibition and to square up to the secrets, demons and a psychoholism dormant in each and every one of us.
