STANISŁAW IGNACY WITKIEWICZ'S ANNIVERSARY
Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz (1885 - 1939), popularly known as Witkacy, was a distinguished Polish playwright, philosopher, art theorist, painter, photographer and novelist. This year, two important anniversaries related to Witkacy are celebrated: the 125th anniversary of Witkacy's birth and the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Witkacy Theatre in Zakopane.

The exhibition has been prepared by The Tatra Museum in cooperation with the Polish Philatelic Society. On display are stamps related to the 600th anniversary of the Battle of Grunwald, one of the most important medieval battles, in which the Polish-Lithuanian army achieved victory over the Order of the Teutonic Knights.

THE TIME OF THE TATRA EXPLORERS

The anniversary exhibition The Time of the Tatra Explorers is organized on the basis of the Tatra Museum's collections acquired during the 120 years of its existence. It shows how the Tatras were discovered and what their importance has been for generations of Poles in the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th centuries.

The exhibition presents unique engravings and drawings dating from 2000 to 2008. These pieces, which are full of inner emotions and experiences, feature signs and symbols that are interwoven with mountain landscapes and motifs to create a semiotic landscape. The mysterious force of the Tatra mountains lies in a tangled history of image, human lives, literature, contemporary thoughts on tradition and the individual interpretation of forms and signs.

This exhibition comes from the collection of Museo Nazionale della Montagna (the National Museum of Mountains) in Turin, Italy. On display are twenty two important and rare photographs that document the beginnings of Alpine photography. Of these, seventeen are new acquisitions, made possible thanks to the financial assistance of Compagnia di San Paolo in Turin, while the others are older acquisitions of the Museum's Centre of Documentation, which holds one of the world's largest collections of mountain photography.

Władysław Hasior (1928-1999) is widely known as one of Poland's leading sculptors of the post-war era, who lived in Zakopane for most of working life. He was the author of many significant monuments, "banners", objects and installations, assemblages, collages and outdoor events. However, little is known about his passion for photography. It was an art form, which accompanied him throughout his creative life. He organized his slides, put them into thematic series and continually worked on them: analysing them, collating and rearranging sets - based on a theme, on a chosen aspect of reality or on a linking element.

ALL IN BLUE: LINEN FOLK PRINTS IN THE TATRA REGION

The exhibition All in Blue: Linen Folk Prints in the Tatra Region is on at the Art Gallery in Koziniec between December 17, 2008 and March 1, 2009. On display are hand-dyed pieces of cloth, wooden printing blocks and historical information about local dyers from the 19th century.

During the Night of Museums 2009, the main building of the Tatra Museum was illuminated thanks to Philips Lighting Poland.
