THE NIGHT OF MUSEUMS 2009

 

The Tatra Museum is organizing its 2nd Night of Museums on Saturday, May 16, from 20:00 to midnight. The Night of Museums across Europe has the patronage of the Council of Europe. The exhibition "The Time of the Tatra Explorers" at the Art Gallery in Koziniec will be the highlight of this Zakopane Night 2009. The visitors will have the exceptional opportunity to meet the exhibition's curators and learn everything they always wanted to know about the exploration of the Tatra mountains and the Highlander culture which took place in the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th centuries.

Free entry to all events.

During the Night of Museums, the main building of the Tatra Museum will be illuminated thanks to Philips Lighting Poland.


  

MAREK ŻUŁAWSKI (1908 - 1985). AN INFINITE QUEST

This exhibition showcases a selection of Marek Żuławski's paintings and drawings from different periods, as well as the artist's commentary on art. It testifies to Żuławski's life-long quest for the most appropriate means of artistic expression and for his own creative path in times of continuous and sometimes extreme transformations in art.


  

OKSZA VILLA, THE NEW BRANCH OF THE TATRA MUSEUM, IS DUE TO OPEN NEXT YEAR [2011]

 

The Tatra Museum, supported by European Union funds and the Małopolska Regional Government, is restoring one of the oldest and finest late 19th century buildings of the Zakopane Style - Oksza villa. After restoration, this unique Zakopane villa will host the Museum's extensive collection of 20th century art.


  

THE NEW MUSEUM'S BRANCH IS OPENED IN ZAKOPANE

CELEBRATING THE TATRA MUSEUM'S 120TH ANNIVERSARY

 

In 2009, the Tatra Museum is celebrating the 120th anniversary of its opening to the public. The statute of this museum, which is the oldest and largest regional museum in Poland, was formulated in 1888 by the founding members of the Tatra Museum Society. The statute stipulated the activities to be undertaken by the Museum (collecting and displaying artefacts connected with the Podhale region and the Tatra mountains) and embraced natural history, ethnography and the arts.

THE ZAKOPANE STYLE OF STANISŁAW WITKIEWICZ - A FASCINATING ALBUM PUBLISHED IN POLISH AND ENGLISH

 

This ground-breaking album, published by award-winning BOSZ publishing house, is written by the director of the Tatra Museum, Teresa Jabłońska, and designed by Leszek Szurkowski, with contemporary photographs by Piotr Droździk. It includes many historic photographs of the unique and influential wooden and masonry buildings conceived by the visionary Stanisław Witkiewicz in the Zakopane Style at the turn of the 19th century, as well as some very rarely seen early pictures of the  Tatra mountains and the village of Zakopane (among others the first known photograph, dated 1860). This lavishly illustrated album is published in a combined  Polish and English version.


  

CHRISTMAS CARDS FROM THE MUSEUM COLLECTION

 

Christmas cards can be purchased in the main building of the Tatra Museum. All cards are reprinted from the old cards belonging to the Museum collection. Most of them were designed by Wacław Boratyński (1909-1939), graphic artist, painter and illustrator from the interwar period.


  

THE TATRA MUSEUM CELEBRATES THE ARRIVAL OF A STUNNING NEW PASTEL SELF-PORTRAIT OF STANISŁAW IGNACY WITKIEWICZ IN THE MUSEUM'S COLLECTION

 

Thanks to a grant from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, a pastel self-portrait of Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz (popularly known as ‘Witkacy’) from 1931 was purchased in August 2008 by the Tatra Museum.


  

Young Poland. Words - Images - Spaces

The Gallery of Art in Koziniec

The exhibition has been prepared by the Museum of Literature in Warsaw and is presented in a new format at the Tatra Museum in Zakopane. It pays tribute to Stanisław Wyspiański (1869-1907), the greatest artist of the "Young Poland" movement. This exhibition presents the "Young Poland" movement through the eyes of Wyspiański to reveal the multitude of themes, moods and the motifs of this artistically rich period.


  

JULIUSZ ZBOROWSKI 'SAMUEL' (1888–1965)

 

September 10 - November 9

The exhibition is devoted to Juliusz Zborowski (1888-1965), called 'Samuel', to celebrate the 120th anniversary of his birth. Zborowski was the first director of the Tatra Museum between 1922 and 1965.

  

Paper, Stroke, Smudge

 

July 19 - August 31, 2008

The exhibition Paper, Stroke, Smudge at the Władysław Hasior Gallery in Zakopane showcases the drawings of two contemporary artists Zofia Broniek and Magdalena Kraszewska.


  

NEW BRANCH OF THE TATRA MUSEUM TO BE OPENED IN JULY 2009

 

The Gąsienica Sobczak family wooden house, situated at 6, Droga do Rojów in Zakopane, is one of the most precious historical folk buildings in Zakopane. In the house, which now belongs to the Tatra Museum, a permanent exhibition is planned to present the interior of a wooden Highlander house from the end of the 19th century.


  

A VISIT FROM MUSEO DELLA MONTAGNA, TURIN, ITALY

 

The director of Museo della Montagna (Museum of the Mountains) in Turin, Italy, Mr Aldo Audisio paid a visit to the Tatra Museum, Zakopane in the first half of July, and was accompanied by Mrs Anna Maria Morello, a senior public official of the Piedmont Region in Italy. The talks with Mrs Teresa Jabłońska, director of the Tatra Museum, concerned the possible future cooperation of both museums.
